There’s a lot of history in the quaint little beach town of New Smyrna Beach, Florida. It’s known as being the second oldest in the state, so you know it’s got a lot of stories. One of the most popular sites to visit in town is the Sugar Mill Ruins. It’s not very often that you come across any sort of ruins in this country, since the colonization here is somewhat recent. That’s why they’ve decided to preserve the remains of this steam sugar and saw mill that was built back in 1830. In fact, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places in 1970 and continues to be a frequently visited destination. The mill was only active for about 5 years before it, along with other buildings in the area, were destroyed during the uprisings of Native Americans and a war that took place between the Seminole Indians and the United States.
