Other Wildlife

New Smyrna Beach is home to the most biologically diverse estuary in North America, the Indian River Lagoon. We have a variety of species that inhabit the water such as alligators, turtles, stingrays, fish, oysters and much more. We also host a large variety of birds, unique flora and fauna and oysters.

Each year, thousands of sea turtles visit the New Smyrna Beach area during nesting season. Species like the loggerhead, leatherhead, green, and Kemp's ridley come ashore to lay their leathery eggs. Approximately two months later, tiny hatchlings emerge and make their way to the ocean. Turtle nesting season begins on May 1. Click here to learn more.
